Thomas Sankara

Thomas Sankara, born on December 21, 1949, in Yako, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), was a military officer and a proponent of Pan-Africanism. He became the President of Burkina Faso after a coup in 1983 and held the position until his assassination in 1987. Sankara is remembered as a charismatic and iconic figure of revolution, a powerful advocate for Pan-Africanism, and workers’ rights.

During his presidency, Sankara implemented significant social, ecological, and economic reforms. He renamed the country from the French colonial name Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which means ‘Land of Incorruptible People’, and its citizens became known as Burkinabé, meaning ‘upright people. His policies were centered on anti-imperialism, rejecting loans and capital from organizations like the International Monetary Fund, while welcoming some foreign aid to boost domestic revenues and strive for self-sufficienc
